Experience
Stephen M. Roylance joined the firm in 1992. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Roylance was associated with an intellectual property boutique in Arlington, Virginia and a general practice firm in Washington, D.C. Mr. Roylance has extensive experience in all aspects of patent practice, including patent preparation and prosecution, negotiation of patent license agreements, litigation, and the rendering of infringement and validity opinions. Mr. Roylance also previously owned and managed a patent search firm.
Practice Areas
Mr. Roylance supervises patent application preparation and prosecution in the chemical and pharmaceutical arts as a member of the firm's patent procurement practice group. As such, Mr. Roylance is additionally responsible for coordinating PCT and foreign patent filings and prosecution with foreign law firms. Mr. Roylance also prepares infringement and validity opinions as a member of the firm's client counseling, licensing and technology transfer practice group. Mr. Roylance is experienced in negotiating patent licenses in diverse areas such as medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and food service systems.
Mr. Roylance is also a member of the firm’s litigation and trial practice group. His practice in this area has a particular emphasis on litigation and counseling in matters relating to the Drug Price Competition and Patent Term Restoration Act of 1984 ("the Hatch-Waxman Act"). Mr. Roylance has experience litigating patents in such diverse areas as pharmaceuticals (including "Orange Book" litigation), sports equipment, medical imaging, and electrical heating.
